The Secret of Anzio Bay
by Michael Mauritz

Order this Book

A WW II fighter plane resurfaces 54 years after it is crash-landed in Anzio Bay bringing to light an incredible war story.

Lt. Michael Mauritz survived a sea crash, escaped from a Nazi prison camp, and was welcomed back to Italy as a hero when his plane "Skipper" resurfaced in 1998.

Mauritz was listed as missing in 1944 after he skillfully crash-landed his plane in the Mediterranean Sea following the initial Allied assault on Anzio. He swam to shore, only to be captured by Germans. But nine days later, Mauritz staged a cunning escape, fleeing across the snowy Apennines on a five-month odyssey.

Mauritz's tale is full of revelations and heroism-from the generous Italian civilians who provided food and shelter despite the dangers, to the wild and daring Patrioti who gave protection. But the return of "Skipper" also answered puzzling questions and completed a story long left in fragments.

When he returned to Italy in 1998 for the unveiling of his Curtiss P-40L fighter plane-the last surviving intact Warhawk in the world- Mauritz captivated the Italian media with an unexpected message and was lauded as an "ambassador of peace."
