"We beat what I consider the top team in baseball when we beat the Pirates."
-Reds' Manager Sparky Anderson
"The fans of Pittsburgh had the luxury of enjoying not only the fun of seeing the Pirates get into the playoffs but the high reward of watching the class reaction of the team after losing..Compared to some of the quotes from other dressing rooms the image of the Pittsburgh Pirates is all the more brilliant. To a man, the Pirates took their defeat with the same grace with which they savored victory. They did not blame each other. They did not take cheap shots at the opposition. They were not surly, nor were they whipped. The interviews at the airport were filled with pride and professionalism. I guess it's true that there's no substitute for victory but if one had to be found, the closest you could come would be the heads-up cloak of dignity that the Pirates wore as easily as they wore the mantle of World Champs. As fans, we are doubly blessed."
-Adam Lynch, Newscaster with WIIC-TV Pittsburgh
Greg Spalding chronicles the finest team that ever played at the confluence, the 1972 Buccos. They fell just short of heading to the World Series for the second straight year with an incredible lineup. Yet what truly sets this team apart was their mature attitude in the midst of a heartbreaking defeat, one of the most bitter in baseball history. He truly admired each player on this team. In fact, he learned spanish as a result of the latin players on the team. This stands as Greg's fifth book. He also wrote SAILING THE THREE RIVERS TO THE TITLE, about the '71 Buccos, SHINE!, ALL-STARS, SHINE! , about the '94 All-Star Game, RUN THE GREATEST RACE, about running life's race, and THREE RIVERS THAT SPAWNED THE CITY OF CHAMPIONS, a history of Three Rivers Stadium. He also served as the editor and publisher for BASEBALL'S BEST KEPT SECRET, the autobiography of Pittsburgh Pirate Al Oliver. Greg also serves as Research Analyst for Sportsweek with Tom McGough, a national weekly tv sports magazine. He serves as an elder in the Beulah Presbyterian Church in Churchill, runs basketball leagues at that facility, teaches spanish at CCAC and enjoys living in the suburbs of the City of Champions with his wife Lilly and son Carlos.
