Legends and Myths

As a child, growing up in Hana was the best! Going to the beach to swim, fish and surf was a two minute walk. Cutting through the neighbor’s backyard and stopping at your aunty’s house was all part of the lifestyle. One important part of this time was visiting grandma and grandpa’s house and spending a couple of days with them. This was a time when you learned the family values and traditions passed down from your great-grandparents. Family stories. Legends and Myths of the Hana area were great to listen to when no television was around.

Ka Ulu Pú Hala o Wákiu is a book of such writings. The purpose of this English project was to introduce, rediscover, read, write and perpetuate Local and Hawaiian Literature. Some of the stories written in this book come directly from student’s parents and grandparents and are specifically for Hana and of the Hana district. Until now, they’ve only been shared within the family context, and may even differ from family to family.

When reading the stories on pages 14-15, we ask that you respect the Hawaiian custom of oral tradition. This printing was made for the sole purpose of sharing these stories with those who do not have the privilege of hearing mo’olelo (stories) passed down from generation to generation. It is by no means an avenue to replace one of our greatest resources, our kupuna. ENJOY!
