From the beaches of the South Pacific:
As they neared the beach, the boat bottomed out. The bow of the boat dropped down and someone shouted "Forward." JT was literally carried along as everyone scrambled toward shore. They ran through knee-high water; some of the men never made it. Bullets buzzed everywhere; mortars were exploding. There was no time to think and no direction that offered safety. Every man was on his own. JT's one thought was, "Stay alive." He ran forward thirty feet and dived for the sand. Beside him lay the lifeless body of Al Casio...
To the beaches of Corpus Christi:
One weekend after spending most of Saturday on the beach in Corpus Christi, JT and Lisa stopped at a drive-in to get something to eat. They watched the sunset then JT kissed Lisa for the first time. He was as nervous as a schoolboy, clumsily leading the way. Her mouth was softer and wetter than he had imagined and he literally wanted to perish. That night going home JT made a bargain with God. "She is all I want in life. Deny me everything else except her"...
