Here at Word Association, we love good poetry. The great 18th century English essayist Samuel Johnson wrote that “No man but a blockhead ever wrote but for money.” Very witty, but we’ve published some fine poets over the years and they didn’t do it for the money and not one of them is a blockhead. Okay, maybe one of them. But let’s ignore Dr. Johnson. People write poetry because they enjoy the challenge of expressing themselves, or as T.S. Eliot argued, the challenge of escaping from themselves. Either way, poetry is a challenge—whether it is written in a form as tight as a sonnet or whether it is written in free verse—which Robert Frost said is like playing tennis without a net.
