After traveling many miles, riding in an Army ambulance, Frances Grummond was finally in the Wyoming territory. She had come from Tennessee, with her husband, George, to Fort Phil Kearny. They were there to protect the fort, located along the Bozeman Trail, for pioneers traveling west. Can this young, Army wife withstand the trials of fort life with battles between the soldiers and Indians always looming on the horizon? How could her Indian friend, Brings Water and her father, be so kind while the Indian brother expressed hostility toward the white people? Her woman's intuition gave Frances a very troubled heart as she lived her life among the people of the fort and realized her worst fear, yet, she clung to her faith in God, who had created the lovely Wyoming sunsets, the "Northern Lights" and the gentle, spring snows.
