THE LITTLE ALAMO is the real life story of a small, elite unit of USAF combat Air Police who volunteered to go to a remote outpost near the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) between North and South Vietnam. The leader of this group was Tech. Sergeant Carl L. Bradford and the airmen that followed him would come to be known as “Bradford’s Bandits.” They were responsible for securing the radar site located at Dong Ha. After its second major enemy attack in less than a month, a news reporter dubbed the site the “Little Alamo.” There were approximately 150 airmen assigned to the air base in 1965. It was the northernmost American base in Vietnam. Later in the war, Dong Ha would become a large Marine combat base, but the Air Force was there first! Air Police were the “grunts” of the Air Force. At Dong Ha, they manned the machine gun bunkers along the perimeter and were the first line of defense against “Charlie” (Viet Cong) penetrating through the wire.
