A keepsake collection of over 600 prize-winning family recipes from residents of Lawrence, Kansas, and surrounding communities, from 1921-1949. On July 29, 1921, the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper announced to its readers an opportunity to win a two-dollar cash prize to the person submitting the best recipe for a vegetable salad. So began The Market Basket Contest, a weekly competition that would span three decades, leaving behind a long trail of prized dishes, some of which might otherwise have been forever lost. Among the more than 600 prize-winning recipes contained in this volume, you'll find: Miss Bartz's Black Raspberry Juice, Mrs. Bahnmaier's Potato Salad with Cheese Mask, Mrs. Rothwell's Cinnamon Rolls, Mrs. Bartley's Love Knots, Mrs. Fey's Hot Oyster Sandwich, Mrs. Kirchhoff's Vegetable Soup, Mrs. Smith's Arroz Con Pollo, Mr. Broadwell's English Meat Pie, Mrs. Jones's Corn Fritters, Mrs. Hunter's Tomato Catsup, Mrs. Beal's Eggs a la Goldenrod, Dr. Bumgardner's Summer Drink, Mrs. Fletcher's Cranberry Juice Cocktail, Mrs. Ralston's Hot Cross Buns, Mrs. Kasson's Strawberry Cream Waffles. Jane Garrett's delightful journey into the kitchens of Lawrence homemakers is truly a timeless treat. Food, family and friends are the stuff of our culture no matter the era, and Jane has accurately captured the ins and outs of daily life as seen through a weekly recipe competition. More fun is found in the frequent use of print ads from the Lawrence Journal-World. The recipes are written as though being told to you across the kitchen table.--Robert Scoular, Lawrence, Kansas Chef
